IF you think big game, or heavy tackle, angling is only for the boys,
think again. Ana Ma. "Mayenn" G. Ordoveza is one lady who will give
any macho angler a run for his money. Mayenn, even this early in the
year, is already the hands down winner of the 2002 Heavy Tackle Angler
of the Year title.
PGFF president Rey Buencamino had
been leading in this category after four tournaments. But Mayenn
outfished Rey in that recent Palawan tournament, and when the points
were computed, it was the lady whose fishing star shone brighter,
winning by a thin margin of 0.752 points.
No freak win, that one, either. You see, Mayenn has been an active competitor since she joined the PGFF
11 years ago "just to be able to receive fishing info, newsletters
and flyers on tournaments." But she also joined competitions that year
and distinguished herself significantly enough to be elected president
of the 52-year-old fishing club on her second year.
If that
is not proof of this lady's fishing skills, get this: Mayenn holds 13
national fishing records, including a 55.10-kg thresher shark on a
50-lb line, a 41-kg Pacific sailfish on a 30-lb line, a 23.5 great
barracuda on a 12-lb line and a 9-kilo wahoo on a 6-lb line.
Talk of lady anglers and old timers recall names like Pat Osias and
Rosie Valencia; and, more recently, Tina Bernasconi. This year the
reigning angling queen is, without a doubt, Mayenn Ordoveza.
The lady is an angler.
