Pantabangan (Intang)
Target species : 'Built in 1980, Pantabangan is a picturesque lake created by damming the Pampangan River in the province of Nueva Ecija. Covering an area of 80,000 hectares, it has a hilly rocky bottom profile and habitats that are conducive for the proliferation of the American largemouth bass. The lake temperature of 20 to 33 degree centigrade is also to their favor.
The biggest bass captured by the local fisherman so far was a stunning 7kg specimen, common is 1-2 kilos.
Worming, crank baiting and trolling are the three common techniques used by local bass anglers to fish bass in the Philippines, with worming fast gaining popularity.
Mr. Alvin Seale from California (USA) introduced in 1907 the large mouth bass (florida strain) to the Philippines as a food fish and sport, reintroduced in 1915 and 1958 and stocked in trinidad lake in the northern province of Benguet and in Caliraya Lake in the Laguna province.
As for the Pantabangan reservoir stocks of bass were also released by the Governor in the time from 1995 to 2000 and similar actions were subsequently taken by other related agencies to promote fishing activities in the lake. The existence of abundant largemouth bass in Pantabangan only went into limelight about two years ago. The locals don't like to eat the largemouth bass (known as tawis in the local language) and this contributes immensely to the proliferation of the fish stock in the lake.
